About Baccarat

Baccarat is an exciting game since you do not necessarily need your hand to win in order to win the bet. The objective of baccarat is to bet on the hand that will end up with the highest total value. You can either bet on your own hand (called “player”) or on the dealer’s hand (called “banker”).

The game baccarat can, for an untrained eye, seem to be intricate and difficult to manage, but in reality, the game is easy to learn, and the banker is the one that needs to follow strict rules.

In the end, you may win out of a game round simply by betting on who will win or if it will be a draw.

You do not necessarily need your hand to win in order to win the bet

Baccarat Rules and Game PlayPlaycards

As mentioned above, the rules of baccarat are pretty easy to learn. Below we will describe how a classic baccarat game works. Remember that both the banker and the player have essential roles in this game. Let us have a look at a baccarat game step-by-step:

Baccarat can be played with six to eight decks of standard playing cards. The objective of the game is to bet on either the player’s or the banker’s hand to win or if it will be a tie.

The game starts when the dealer deals two cards each to the player and the banker. Once the cards are dealt, it is time to add them up to get the hand’s total value.

The cards are added up, and the hand that comes closest to nine wins. Face cards and tens are worth zero points, and aces are worth one point. All other cards are worth their face value.

If a hand totals more than nine, the second digit of the total becomes the score. For example, the hand is worth two points if the player is dealt a seven and a five (totalling 12).

Both hands automatically stand if the player or banker is dealt an eight or a nine.

If neither the player nor the banker has a natural (an eight or nine), the player’s hand is played first following these rules:

  • If the player’s total is five or less, they draw a third card.
  • If the player’s total is six or seven, they stand.

If the player stands, the banker’s hand is played using the same rules as above, with one exception:

  • The banker draws another card if their total is zero to two.
  • The banker stands if their total is seven.
  • If the banker’s total is three to six, whether they draw a third card depends on the player’s third card.

If the player has drawn a third card and the banker has a hand worth 3-6 points, the banker will draw a third card if the player’s third card is either a 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7. The banker will not draw a third card if the player’s third card is not any of these numbers.

Once the hands are finished, the highest hand wins. There are three possible outcomes:

  • If the player wins, bets on the player are paid out at even money.
  • If the banker wins, bets on the banker are paid out at even money, minus a 5% commission.
  • If there is a tie, bets on the tie are paid out at 8:1 or 9:1, depending on the casino.

Pretty simple, don’t you think? If not, let us summarize it for you:

Here’s a table summarizing the different moves that can be made in baccarat and when they should be made:

Move, When to Make

Bet on winner or tie At the beginning of the game
Banker deal cards At the beginning of the game and after bets have been placed
Time to add up cards After cards dealt
Check for natural If either the player or the banker has a total of eight or nine
Player draws third card If player’s total is five or less
Banker draws third card If banker’s total is zero to two, or three to six if player drew a third card
Determine winner After both hands have been played according to the rules
Pay out bets Winning bets are paid out after winners have been determined

The House Edge In Baccarat

The house edge in baccarat varies depending on the type of bet. In Punto Banco, the house edge on a player bet is approximately 1.24%, and the house edge on a banker bet is approximately 1.06%, after accounting for the 5% commission on banker bets. The house edge on a tie bet is much higher, at approximately 14.36%.

In Chemin de Fer and Baccarat Banque, the house edge is generally lower than in Punto Banco, with some estimates putting it at around 1%. However, the house edge can vary depending on the specific rules and number of decks used in the game.

Possible Payouts in Baccarat

Type of Bet Description Payout
Player wins Predict that the player will have a higher hand total than the banker, 1 to 1
Banker wins Predict that the banker will have a higher hand total than the player, 0.95 to 1 (5% commission)
Tie bet Predict that both the player and banker will have the same hand total, 8 to 1 or 9 to 1

Different Types of Baccarat canda leaf

As it commonly goes, popular games will be developed into new versions to attract players. This is also the case in baccarat, where you will find several types. Below you can read more about some of the more popular ones:

Punto Banco (most common and described above)

This is the most popular variant of baccarat and is played in most casinos and online casinos. In Punto Banco, players bet on either a player win or a banker win.

The highest hand total, will be the winner. It is also possible to bet on a tie if the player believes both hands will have the same total. The game is typically played with six to eight decks of cards, and the dealer controls both hands.

Chemin de Fer

This variant of baccarat is played mainly in Europe and is known for its high stakes. In Chemin de Fer, players take turns acting as the banker, and the banker’s position rotates after each hand.

In this version of baccarat, players will be betting against each other rather than against the banker. The game is typically played with six decks of cards, and the players have the option to draw a third card.

Baccarat Banque

This variant of baccarat is also played mainly in Europe and is similar to Chemin de Fer. In Baccarat Banque, the banker will be dealing the cards, but instead of one baccarat table there are two joint tables, making space for more players. The game is played with three decks of cards.

Live Dealer Baccarat

This online variant of baccarat is played with a live dealer rather than a computer-generated one. The game is played via video stream, and players can interact with the dealer and other players. The rules of the game are often the same as Punto Banco.

Mini Baccarat

Mini Baccarat is a simplified version of regular baccarat with the same rules and payouts. The game is played with fewer decks (often one to six), and there are usually lower betting limits, making it suitable for beginners. This variant of baccarat can be found in both land-based casinos and online casinos.

Play Baccarat Live – A Great Selection is Available

There are many reasons why someone would choose to play baccarat online, whether in a live casino or a computer-simulated game.

First, we should mention that you will likely be given a casino bonus when signing up with a new online casino. This bonus can usually be used for online baccarat as well as other table games.

Furthermore, playing online baccarat gives you the advantage of being able to play from the comfort of your own home. This can be especially useful if you don’t have a brick-and-mortar casino nearby.

The great selection available for live dealer baccarat games is another plus point for those looking to enjoy this classic game, specially at the top online casinos. Depending on where you choose to play, you can find different variants of the game and enjoy a more immersive experience with a real-life dealer.

Live baccarat games also usually have higher betting limits than other online casino games, which could make them more attractive for high rollers.

The Baccarat Table

The equipment used to play baccarat includes a baccarat felt table, and a set of cards. The table is kidney-shaped and has room for dealers and players.

How many players that can be seated around the table depends on the version of baccarat and the baccarat table itself. The cards used in baccarat are standard playing cards, typically with six to eight decks used in play.

The baccarat table has markings on it that indicate where players can place their bets, and each player has their own personal betting area.

The table also has markings that designate the player, banker, and tie areas. The dealer is responsible for shuffling the cards and dealing them, and the players are responsible for placing their bets and making decisions during the game.

FAQ: Baccarat

Baccarat is a card game usually played in casinos. The goal of the game is to guess if the banker’s hand or the players hand will get closer to 9 points, with both the player and the banker being dealt two cards.

Although some people swear that baccarat is a game of skill, it is mostly down to luck. The outcome of the game is determined by whether the players or banker hand gets closer to 9 points. There are no decisions for players to make except guessing the outcome of the game round.

The object of baccarat is to guess which hand will get closer to 9 points. Players can bet on either the player’s hand, the banker’s hand, or a tie. The highest hand will be declared the winner of the round, and player bets that are betting on a winning hand will be paid accordingly.

Baccarat is usually dealt with six to eight decks of cards. The banker will shuffle the decks and deal two cards face down to the player and two cards to the banker hand. Who acts as a banker depends on the version of baccarat you are playing. Usually, the casino will have an assigned dealer.

A natural win is when a hand is dealt with an 8 or 9 points without hitting a third card. This results in an automatic win, and the round is over. If this happens, any bets on the banker hand will be paid accordingly. Natural wins are rare and can make for exciting game rounds.

The total score of each hand is counted by adding together the value of each card, with aces counting as 1 and face cards counting as 0. If the score becomes a double-digit the first digit will fall away, and the remaining digit is the value of the hand.
